One of my favorite workouts is doing HIIT training—that’s high intensity interval training. Especially when you don’t have time to diddly daddle, this is how you take care of business. 4 minutes of HIIT training can be more effective than 30-45 minutes of cardio, because you can burn up to 9 times more calories and fat compared to a traditional cardio workout—who doesn’t love that?
The reason why it’s so effective is what researchers call the AfterBurn Effect. Basically, your body burns more calories while you rest when you’ve done a HIIT, because as researchers have found, HIIT workouts can trigger the body to produce more human growth hormone (HGH). HGH is naturally produced in our bodies, but as we get older, production slows down. When your body produces HGH during exercise, the result is burning fat after training—hence, “AfterBurn Effect.” A study showed as much as a 530% increase of HGH after a “30-second all-out effort sprint.” On top of that, the study showed that HGH circulated in the body “for two hours after this type of high intensity exercise.” So imagine how long you can keep the AfterBurn Effect going after just a 15 minute HIIT, or a 20 minute HIIT. I’ll let you do the math ;).
Another bonus…while some celebrities are getting artificial HGH injections for anti-aging and rejuvenating purposes, the truth is “the fountain of youth is a puddle of sweat.”
The thing to remember about HIIT workouts is that as great as it is, you can’t do them every day. Your body needs to recover, because that’s where it will reap the benefits of such a workout. So, if you don’t let your body recover, you’ll wear it down, and you could even break it down. This is true of any exercise, but especially here. HIIT workouts should be incorporated into a “structured plan.” That’s another reason why I love Turbo Fire. Turbo Fire takes care of all that for me, and all I do is follow the schedule.
HIIT workouts are an athletic, high energy, intense, no joke kind of workout, but it’s also fun as hell. At least, it’s fun as hell in the Turbo Fire program with Chalene Johnson. The music is great, and Chalene is a tiny but explosive ball of energy—my kind of gal! The first time I ever did a HIIT workout, I did a 30 minute HIIT and I ached all over for days—but in the best ways. I loved it. I loved the intensity, and I loved everybody’s energy during and after the workout. As sore as I was after that first round, I felt so good, and quickly found Turbo Fire to be my “workout soulmate.”
