One of the best pieces of wisdom a friend ever bestowed upon me was that being “ready” is bullshit. We are never ready for anything, we just have to pull up our big girl or big boy panties, and figure it out as we go. So, as we were lunching over gyros and pitas, we were consoling a friend who had just gotten dumped, and when I heard him say that, I wanted to raise a whole lamb to sacrifice to the Gods. I thought, “Yeah. What the hell is everyone doing complaining and making excuses about not being ready?” Ready for what? Parents are never ready to be parents, and even when they think they are they’ll still screw up at times. They’ll drop their baby on its head, or lose him in the mall, or whatever. So really, what are we trying to be ready for? Because if we’re waiting to be ready for a life without flaws, without mistakes—a life of unattainable and unrealistic perfection—then we’ll be waiting a long time to be ready. And if that’s what we’re waiting for, then the really sad part is that we’ll prevent our own happiness. If you want something, make it happen, and be ready to not be ready. BIG LOVE & HUGS Love, Justine
