I recently spoke with Mickie Zada on her podcast Surviving Abuse Network. Mickie lived in abuse for 34 years and essentially restarted her life at 50. She started Surviving Abuse Network, to create a positive and supportive space for survivors, and also offers a helpful tool for helping those who many not realize they're in an abusive relationship.
Mickie's story is not uncommon, but it's inspiring all the same. As is abundantly clear in the media and current political state, we have centuries of misogyny and abuse to unlearn, which is why so many women like Mickie stayed in abusive relationships for as long as they did. It's something we accepted as normal for too long. That is all changing, but we've barely cracked the door open as the Kavanugh hearing showed us.
I enjoyed my conversation with Mickie and love the network she has created. The more we support each other, and stand up for one another, the more we can work towards a culture without abuse. It's important that all survivors know they have the power to choose life, choose happiness, and choose themselves. If you're just learning how to find your voice, or if you've been finding your voice, check out her website. I'm sure you'll find many of the conversations she has on her podcast comforting and inspiring.
