Who caught the season premier of “Downton Abbey?” I’ve been counting down the days to January 6, 2013 for months, and the day finally arrived. I actually wasn’t home to watch it last night, so I had to watch it this morning as I ate my breakfast and counted the donations made at my 2nd Annual Love, Justine Party on Saturday.
The thing I love about this show is that there are so many really strong and interesting characters. A lot of times in television series, there’s always at least one or two characters who really take the spotlight. I don’t feel like that’s the case. Of course, Lady Mary takes the spotlight amongst the sisters; but then you have Lord and Lady Grantham (I love Lady Grantham), the ever incredible Maggie Smith as the Dowager Countess of Grantham, even the regular staff at Downton with their various storylines—Mrs. Patmore, Ms. O’Brien, Ms. Hughes, Mr. Carson, Anna and Mr. Bates, sweet Daisy, even nasty Thomas—and now…the marvelous Ms. Shirley MacLaine to add to the mix. I’m afraid to say how much I like Mr. Crawley, because he seems too perfect a man—righteous, intelligent, handsome, and slightly romantic. Is that possible?
Season 3 has definitely opened up several storylines, and continued others. Mary and Matthew’s wedding was like a bit of a small royal occasion in town, Edith is in love with an older man, Mrs. Hughes may have cancer, the Granthams/Crawleys are facing financial ruin, Anna is still feverishly trying to free her husband from jail, the Crawleys are finally coming round to accepting Sybil’s Irish revolutionist husband, Lady Grantham still proves to be the most good-hearted and good-natured, proper woman, and we enter an era where the division between classes is slowly becoming blurred and skewed. It’s all very exciting, isn’t it?
Anyways, we all know that as much as I am a sucker for great storylines and interesting characters, I’m as big of a sucker for great fashion and style as well. “Downton Abbey” is not only a great series for its storyline and characters, but no doubt for its style as well. The dresses, the suits, the accessories, the furniture, the dining sets, everything just takes you back to such a romantic and changing era.
I love it!
