All season, I’ve been preparing myself for Matthew’s departure, speculating how they were going to kill him off. Being killed off just seemed more plausible than walking off.
I have to say though, tragic as it was, I wasn’t so impressed with his departure. I mean, when Sybil died, I cried. I was heartbroken. Matthew’s departure however, I felt was a bit unoriginal. First of all, why is it in this show, that someone must always die after a birth has occurred. It’s extremely tragic the first time around, and the second time around it’s a bit overplayed. Secondly, it was a bit Great Gatsby, Boy Capel…which I guess may have been a time period appropriate way to go. I guess if you’re going to die in a romantically tragic way in the 20’s, you better die in car crash…? I don’t know, but as soon as I saw Matthew elatedly speeding down the road it became very predictable. I immediately said, “Oh no, oh no, oh no.” Just ask my friend who was with me.
No matter, I’m incredibly saddened, and I can’t wait for next season. But still, I wish the writers could have come up with something a little cleverer.
I wonder what Downton will now do with two single parents in the house…
