I went to my first LA Galaxy game over the weekend and was pleasantly surprised by the energy there. The stadium they play in is small, and it wasn’t packed, but the fans there were like fans of any other sport I know—loud, riveting, and passionate. We sat right near a section of what appeared to be some sort of fan club or something, as there was a large bushy haired man leading them in song, chants, cheers, clapping, drumming, you name it. I have no idea how he has a voice after each game with the way he was yelling throughout the game. It was great.
Before heading to the game, I thought about putting on my United shirt, but then I thought, nah, let me not be that idiot. However, when I got there, I realized I would not have been the only one. It’s funny—there were certainly the avid, true and die hard Galaxy fans; but I think amongst the crowd were also just a bunch avid soccer lovers. So, there were United shirts, Barca, shirts, Bayern shirts, and more.
The other thing that surprised me was that there were quite a number of folks already sporting Gerrard shirts. I had no idea the man had a fan base here. I suppose he’s essentially doing what Beckham did when Beckham played for the Galaxy. Basically, LA pays him lots of money to help grow audience numbers and popularity of the sport in the US, or at least in LA; and he’s too old to be of good use to any reputable team in Europe, so it’s a good move for him—more or less hanging his boots up in LA. Regardless, it’s wonderful. I think it’s absolutely wonderful that folks are already excited for him to come over.
I didn’t really expect much out of attending this game. I happened to be given a couple of tickets for donating blood, so thought it would be fun for my man and I to go since we both love soccer. To be quite honest, I largely expected the crowd to be more or less mundane; but I’m so glad I was wrong. Soccer has a life line here!
It was great fun, and as normal tickets are not outrageously expensive, I think it’s a great weekend event to enjoy with the family, or as a nice little date night.
Looking for something to do in the greater LA area? Go catch a Galaxy game.
