For the first time in a long time, I was super excited for the VMAs this year. I’m not even totally sure why, but most likely it had to do with the little rumour that *NSYNC might be reuniting. And of course, when it came to *NSYNC vs. Backstreet Boys, I was totally an *NSYNC girl. So yeah, I suppose that is what had me so stoked.
Lady Gaga’s show opener was very Gaga. My mom was impressed with her wig changes. What I love about her is that she is in fact an incredible singer, performer, and artist. That always comes through in her performance, even if you don't quite understand her. And she’s got a bangin’ body.
Now…Miley Cyrus’ performance was disturbing. Very disturbing. I mean, so disturbing I was worried I'd have nightmares. There is something wrong with a 21-year-old girl who moves around stage like a perverted rapper. I also didn’t understand anything coming out of her mouth. And then when she grinded on Robin Thicke, uggh, I just have no words for how wrong that was. Any children watching may need therapy now. I think most everyone in the room was trying to be respectful by not making any faces, but you could totally see it in their eyes that this was one bizarre performance. But the Smiths' reactions summed it all up. Also, she's a tiny and fit girl, but her knickers were on too tight. Just sayin'. It really just felt like she crashed Robin Thicke’s performance. I honestly think that she and Amanda Bynes are possessed by the same very strange soul. It's weird. So weird. Anyways…
I changed the channel when Kanye West performed. I can’t ever listen to his music or watch his performances, because I’m afraid his ego is going to come out at me and invade my space and then I'm going to have chlosterphobic nightmares.
Justin Timberlake’s performance, alone, was worth watching the VMAs this year. I mean, no one else moved the audience as much as he did. Taylor and Selena were living out their childhood memories, Gaga was having such a good time, and One Direction was taking notes…man, I could just feel the energy in the arena. Also, I love that Lady Gaga was still in her seashell bra and thong rockin’ out to JT. And he got a standing ovation from the Fresh Prince. Long live JT!
Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ performance was enjoyable. They clearly love what they do. You could tell the whole night that they were really excited to be there, and I think it’s great that they rapped about something positive and meaningful, rather than lewd sex and drugs.
I feel indifferent to Drake’s performance, but I’m probably the wrong person to judge his performance. I mean, for me, he just rapped and some smoke went up at the end. However, Jaden Smith looked like he was going to cry tears of joy after his performance, so I suppose that’s kudos to his performance.
And then there was Bruno Mars. That man is so talented, there is no question about it, and he never fails to impress in his live performances. So, there was no exception this time. Even without all the laser beams, pyro, and giant gorilla, his performance still would’ve been hot. There’s just so much passion and energy in his voice.
Before we get into Katy Perry’s performance, can I just say how hilarious Joseph Gordon Levitt was announcing Video of the Year? I mean, why the voice???? Hahah. He’s so awesome I don’t even care. And then JT’s acceptance speech for Video of the Year was definitely the best acceptance speech of the night. Grandparents rule!
Throughout the show they kept building up Katy Perry’s performance, so by the end of the show I was so anxious to see it, and was really expecting to see something crazy happen. Well first, it looked like she stole MGM’s lions for her stage decoration. And though nothing super crazy happened, she closed the show leaving us all in an inspirational and kickass mood. Though I think I was still high off of JT’s performance.
It’s kind of funny that the VMAs still exist, considering the fact that MTV does not play music videos anymore. I don’t think it even does so early in the morning. The VMAs may be the only time a year that music videos, and music in general, are played on MTV. JT’s performance was obviously my favorite, and made the whole show worth watching. Other than that, I've definitely seen better VMAs. My biggest disappointments however, were the fact that Ellie Goulding did not perform, and Olly Murs wasn’t there. That needs to be fixed next year.
Hope those of you who tuned in enjoyed it. If not, do spill why ;)
BIG LOVE & HUGS
