I think that the one thing visitors to The City of Angels don’t think to do is go horseback riding. Everyone flocks to the beaches, to Sunset, to Rodeo, and to the Walk of Fame. But let me tell you, L.A.’s got some great trails with uniquely fascinating views. I mean, you’re out there on a horse, in nature, and sprawled out in front of you and below you is the hustle and bustle of the city with a nice little blanket of smog over it. I know most people are thinking why the heck would I want to look at a smoggy view of the city. However, if you want to see L.A., I’m telling you, you have to see it from this way, as well. It gives you a bit of perspective when you do. You know, here you are in the city where dreams come true when people dance with the devil. Plus, it’s a great workout. I recently went during a little scheduled study break, and my friend and I decided to go for three hours. Needless to say, my bum is in pain. But my legs feel amazing. I always feel like a warrior after a good day of riding. Whatever you do though, don’t forget to WEAR SPF!!! I forgot to put it on my arms and shoulders, and now I have majorly awkward tan lines. There are quite a number of places that do trail rides in L.A., but the one I’m going to recommend is called Circle K (http://www.circlekhorserentals.com). In case you didn’t notice from the URL, it’s actually a horse rental place, but they do give lessons if you’re a beginner. If you’re new to this area a guide will go with you to make sure you go the right way, but he’s not like a tour guide who is going to spew off the history of the city for you. However, many people go guideless. It’s not difficult to figure your way around there. If you’re an experienced rider, this place is particularly nice, because you have more freedom to go as you wish. Some trail rides don’t allow you to go faster than a cantor, or you’re walking one horse behind the other, and personally, I don’t really care to stare at another horse’s behind the whole time. Plus, I wanted to be able to chat with my friend, because it was good quality girl time. Fitness with friends! So anyways, there in the Burbank hills, we could see the Disney studios, Griffith Observatory, downtown, the Hollywood sign, and basically the entire city. It’s a nice ride for picnicking too, because up at the top there are picnic tables. So you can enjoy the view, recharge your batteries, and the horses can have a little break. There are also plenty of hikers who come to this area too, and many with their dogs. So all in all it's very rejuvenating and invigorating atmosphere. An extra bonus—Circle K is much more cost friendly than other trail rides. It’s $25 for the first hour, then $20 for each additional hour. So if you’re ever in the L.A. area, or if you’re a local, consider a exploring L.A. the way the first settlors on the golden coast did. You’ll have a fabulous time. BIG LOVE & HUGS Love, Justine
