I got my B.A. in Global & International Studies, and it’s one of those majors that you can either do everything with, or nothing with—it’s just all perspective and your own will.  I actually switched majors after my first year from Communications to Global & International Studies, and it was the best decision I made in university.
In one of the required upper division classes, we were assigned to read a book called “Dreams of Trespass,” by Fatima Mernissi.  I’m so glad I read it, because I remember there being many people who didn’t read much for this class.  Although, I think in general, students don’t read much in undergrad.  This book, however, rocked my ambitions.

In “Dreams of Trespass,” Mernissi describes life growing up in a harem, but this book went beyond just cultural insight.  This book is literary seduction into the social affairs and struggles that a girl faces while growing up—and in particularly Mernissi describes growing up a Muslim girl, and growing up in a harem during the mid-20th century in Morocco.   Even so, whether or not you are Muslim or have a clue about harem life, the stories and memories Mernissi strings together colorfully illustrates that which transcends cultural borders.

I don’t want to give too much away though, because I want you to go read it.  Anytime someone is looking for something to read, and they ask me for suggestions, I always recommend “Dreams of Trespass.”  And if you’re a girlfriend or female relative of mine, I’ll probably force you to read it by suggesting it countless times before giving it to you as a birthday or Christmas present, after you’ve ignored my suggestion for too long.  It’s a delightful read—quite funny—and while I encourage everyone to read it, I highly encourage young girls and women to read it.  Trust me, you will be inspired.

BIG LOVE & HUGS

Justine
