Best dressed: a tie between Ellie Goulding in Furne one Amato Couture and Selena Gomez in Versace Atelier.
I’m not going to lie, there are a lot of faces and names I did not recognize on the red carpet tonight.  And a lot of those faces made some interesting red carpet choices. At least I knew who all the nominees were…right?  In any case, you all know I love a great dress and the VMAs usually turns up some great ones.

So…

Wow, Lady Gaga arrived on the red carpet in the most toned down red carpet look we’ve ever seen on her.  She had minimal make up on, long black hair, and I think she’s channeling her inner Morticia Addams here in a black floor-length Prabal Gurung.  Personally, I’m not a fan of the dress.  I thought it was ill-fitting on her.  From the back I thought it looked great, but the front just did not work for me.

Ew, Miley Cyrus’ little Dolce e Gabbana ensemble, together with that ridiculous hairdo looks like she tried to dress up as Scary Spice going to Carnivale or something, only it was an epic fail, because it’s 2013 not 1998…and she’s not a Spice Girl.  I seriously do not understand the girl.  And the shoes were hideous.  I really feel like she and Amanda Bynes are currently possessed by the same strange soul.

Katy Perry turned up in a leopard print Emanuel Ungaro dress, decorated with gold dragonflies.  It’s not a personal favorite of mine, but it’s the VMAs so I think it works for this event, because you’re allowed to, even encouraged to be a bit wacky and daring  on the red carpet.  It’s got a very Katy Perry flavor.  I’m not a fan of the giant slit, but the rest of the dress fits her nicely, and she looks so happy…that or she’s just trying very hard to gracefully escape all the dragonflies headed toward her face.

Rita Ora’s Alexandre Vauthier Couture dress I think was fantastic for the VMAs.  That girl is so gorgeous, and I’m so jealous she’s dating Calvin Harris.  I’m not crazy about the material of the long lavender trail, because it looks like a giant overly shaggy bath rug; however, because it’s the VMAs, I think it works.  And the sparkly top part of the dress, and all the colors I absolutely love.  Although, she should have used some tape to support her boobs, because they didn't look too good in the dress.

At first Ciara’s Givenchy dress looks gorgeous, but once I hit her hips and down, I didn’t love it anymore.  I don’t know, it looks like it went from classy and elegant, to hoochy and Vegas.  It was just too sheer.

Ellie Goulding, my lovely darling!  She’s a gorgeous woman and her Furne one Amato Couture dress was VMA PERFECT.  It was sleek, sexy, and the spikes and studs make it so fierce and so Ellie.

I give Austin Mahone an A for effort, because I like the black with red accents.  However, his jacket looks like he picked up in the child’s department, and I know he’s really young, but not young enough to be buying his clothes at “Kids R Us.”  His trousers also could have done with a little ironing.  The shoes matched his jacket though, so like I said, A for effort.

2 Chainz is one of those who really upset me, because I feel like he ruined a perfectly good Versace outfit.  Uggh.  Nikki Minaj used to do this all the time, and I just can’t stand it.  I’m not even going to go on about it, because it just upsets me so.

Ed Sheeran, adorable as he is, looked like he was going out on any other night.  I did like his fun colored Jordans though.

Robin Thicke looked sharp as ever on the red carpet.  And his wife Paula Patton was smokin’ in that strapless, black, floor length dress with thigh high slit.  I didn’t love the suit he wore on stage, but I forgive him, because he probably didn’t want to get Miley cooties all over his nice suit as she was grinding and groping him.

I don’t know who Holland Roden is, and at first her Naeem Khan dress looked very pretty, and too pretty for the VMAs, but then you realize she’s wearing trousers and the skirt does not go all the way around, as if the dress was like “Ooo I want to be a pretty dress!”  And then at the last minute was like “Wait, I can’t decide, maybe I’ll be a pair of trousers too!”

As for Selena Gomez, hot hot hot in Versace Atelier! This is how you do Versace. I don’t even need to say anything more.

Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez are clearly good friends, because they both turned up in similar shades of blue. Taylor’s dark blue bondage Herve Leger dress was beautiful and it hugged her in all the right places, but I think that it might not have been the right dress for the VMAs.  The way she did her hair clearly shows that she was trying to channel her inner vintage vixon, but I think it looked too old on her.  She could have pulled off that look with different hair.

Lil’ Kim used to be the reason to watch the VMA red carpet, and this year she looked like a cute little superhero.

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis…one of them tried too hard and the other did not try hard enough.  I do like the mint green color of Ryan’s suit, but the mink fur shawl?  I get that maybe it was supposed to match the music video, but it looked like he was trying too hard to put on the image that he’s some rapper with swagger.  And Macklemore looked sloppy.

O my goodness, the Smith kids.  I love their parents, but I worry about the level headedness of their children.  Jaden often looks a bit too arrogant, which is really just unbecoming.  And his sister gives off that air sometimes, too.  I’ve seen Willow get really creative with her looks, and I would say this was one of her least creative.  She actually looked like she was preparing for some futuristic alien movie, with the bangs, straight hair, and red accent.  However, the Smiths were having family outing with dad at the VMAs and I just love what a tight knit family they are.

There were definitely lots more outfits to talk about, but to be honest, I just didn’t feel like it.  It just would have been a lot of fashion bashing, and I didn't want to get too negative here.  So yeah...the red carpet definitely set an unimpressive mood for the VMAs.  Which is in some sense sad, but I think MTV did that to itself.  The VMAs used to be so exciting, but eh…what can you expect when Music Television stops playing music videos, and then tries to host what used to be one of the biggest parties of the year.

I will say though, that the move to Brooklyn was very hip of them to do, following a growing trend, but I don’t know that it did more than that.  Ten to fifteen years ago, the VMAs in Brooklyn would have made a statement and put Brooklyn on the map.  Today though, MTV was just following a trend instead of setting one.

Ta-ta for now!

BIG LOVE & HUGS

Love,

Justine
